Reels of tarot card readings and of people showing off their soulmate drawings from psychics trend on Instagram Reels. These soulmate drawings are for people who have not met their spouse yet, and it shows them a picture of that supposed soulmate. Besides these seen on social media platforms, psychics also perform palm readings and give horoscopes. I am having a difficult time finding the history of psychics. Even by typing in the word "Christian" in front of it, I am only met with articles encouraging people to practice it. Goes to show you that this is the way of the world. Tarot cards are associated with divination—unlocking the secrets of the future by occult, supernatural means. Divination is strictly prohibited in the Bible. Tarot cards come in a deck of 78 individual cards. They were developed about 600 years ago for gaming. However, some mystics, psychics, and occultists began to use the cards for divination, and today the cards and the ability to “read” them are seen as elements of fortune-telling. To receive a tarot reading is to attempt to find out things about one’s life or future through the occult. The Bible first warns against divination in the Old Testament when the Israelites were going to enter the Promise Land. Deuteronomy 18:9-12 and Leviticus 19:26 straight out prohibit such practices. Acts 16 even shows us how tarot card readings have a demonic opening or guidance. In this passage, Paul meets a fortune teller whom the Bible attributes her ability to having a demonic spirit. The Bible does not specifically tell us the fortune teller's tools, but no matter what she used, those items used to give readings brought honor to demonic spirits. Despite the numerous warnings against divination and psychic practices throughout the Bible, many Christians still practice it. When searching Youtube for testimonies on those who no longer practice because of accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, I also found a ton of videos of Christians justifying the practice. I pray for those who have made such videos and those who practice this in general that they will repent and turn towards Christ. I have followed Doreen Virtue on Instagram for quite a while and often share her posts to my Instagram story. I just started watching her videos when I stumbled upon her Youtube channel in preparation for this article, and her videos tackling New Age practices are mind blowing. They are all Scripture supported, so I 100% recommend watching her videos.
Besides the practice of divination, we need to check our hearts. What or who are you putting your trust in for your future? I understand 1000% wanting answers as to the future and hating having to wait for them. The uncomfortableness of sitting in the unknown can be excruciating some days. However, nothing and no one can give you the answers you need besides our Lord. Seeking divination may give you the answer, but what is the trade off? A slightly twisted version of truth? Misinterpreting the fortune? Opening yourself to demonic forces? Most importantly, as Christians, our hearts should break for what breaks God's heart, and we should hate what he hates. Our everlasting love that comes with being His adopted child once we are saved should drive us to repent seeking anything besides Him.
If you are in a season of waiting, do not rush and impetuously jump to seek what you can to get out of it. God is sovereign and intentional down to every last detail. We can trust Him with every tomorrow because He is already there. By studying Scripture, we are able to learn about God and His attributes, which will bring you comfort in those times of uncertainty because you know who He is, and that you are not left to chance. If you currently are seeking psychics or have sought psychics for answers or practice or have practiced this divination, I encourage you to repent and to run to Christ. You may feel as if it is too late, but it is never too late to turn to Him. He will forgive you and adopt you into His kingdom. You have that second chance to turn away and start a new life. That answer and satisfaction you are seeking lies only in Christ, nothing else in this world can satisfy that longing for security and peace. That is why we want to know our future so badly, right? Any answer you receive outside of God is only going to be a cheapened counterfeit filled with consequences.
