One of my favorite Elisabeth Elliot quotes is: “Fear arises when we think everything depends on us.”
I know that I feel most fearful when I fear making a mistake, messing up my life or someone else’s life. If you’re in your twenties, it’s a time where major life decisions are happening that should be exciting: starting a career and starting a family. There’s an added pressure when facing a door of opportunity that you’re unsure if you should or can handle walking through. Thus, I would argue that fear ultimately comes from the unknown of what comes next.
We may not have total control of what happens next or the outcome of decisions, but we do have control over how we react when those things come. We can choose to sit and let anxiety and fear fester, or we can trust God, knowing He is Sovereign. One thing that has helped me is looking back at times I have been in a similar situation to the one I am facing and seeing how each time God has made Himself obviously known.
Exodus 4:10-12 exemplifies God’s sovereignty and intentionality. When God told Moses of His plans, Moses said that he couldn’t because of his speech impediment. God’s responds by saying: “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” (Exodus 4:11-12, ESV). When God chose Moses to be His mouthpiece to Pharaoh to let the Israelites go, God wasn’t unaware of Moses’s speech impediment. The very thing that Moses was fearful of is exactly what God chose to use Moses for. It was not Moses’s strength and ability that he would be using, but God was guiding and acting each step of the way. God is so purposeful that every single thing you have gone through is not by accident, but Him leading you to your purpose in Him. What you have gone through, both big and small, good and bad, qualifies you to serve God in the what He has set before you. Why? God is the one who qualifies you and has prepared you. It’s Him and not us.
